„The Dilemmas”. In his essays Lem is not a visionary looking into the future, sketching possible worlds, but a commentator of current events. He discusses policies of American and Russian governments, consequences of the terrorist attack on the United States, expresses his views on accomplishments in literature and plastic arts, including new trends in literary studies and philosophy, comments (with horror) on the downfall of mass culture (the phenomenon of reality shows), presents newest achievements of science – particularly in the field of genetics, as these correspond closely with what seems most important to Lem – the evolution of man as a species and the evolution of human culture. |
